Stadsschouwburg Nijmegen – relocating a large painting

The project
On behalf of Stadsschouwburg Nijmegen and Concertgebouw De Vereeniging, we carried out the complete deinstallation, relocation, and reinstallation of a monumental painting by Robert Terwindt. Measuring an impressive 300 x 450 cm, the work had been displayed prominently in the Stadsschouwburg and required careful transfer to the Concertgebouw in Nijmegen.
Our team managed the entire process, from safely removing the painting from the wall to reinstalling it at its new location. Throughout, the protection of the artwork was our highest priority.
The challenges
The painting was of an impressive size and stretched on a large stretcher frame. Removing it from the frame, detaching the canvas, and safely rolling it without causing any damage required specialist skills and experience. In addition, there was the challenge of manoeuvring the work through the building and transporting it without any risk of contact or distortion.
Our plan of action
We began by carefully removing the painting from the wall in the Stadsschouwburg. The canvas was taken out of its frame, detached from the stretcher, and rolled onto a large, specially prepared tube. The roll was then wrapped and packed in protective film.
After transport to the Concertgebouw, the process was carried out in reverse. The stretcher was reassembled, the canvas re-stretched, and placed back into the frame. Finally, we installed the painting in its new location, ensuring a precise and secure presentation.

The result
The painting by Robert Terwindt found a new home at the Concertgebouw Nijmegen, fully intact and in optimal condition. Thanks to a combination of specialist expertise, precision, and careful handling, the relocation went smoothly. The work can now be admired once again in a different setting, ready to inspire its visitors.
