Nederlands Fotomuseum – Relocation to a new museum home

The project
How do you relocate 6.5 million photographic objects? The Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam faced this challenge when moving its entire collection from the Wilhelminakade to the renovated national monument Pakhuis Santos. Thanks to a donation from Stichting Droom en Daad, the historic warehouse has been completely renewed. In the summer of 2025, the museum will reopen here with exhibitions, the Gallery of Honour of Dutch Photography, a library, an education centre, a darkroom, and a café.
The challenges
The collection consists of a wide variety of objects: from fragile glass negatives to rare photographic prints and books. Each object requires its own approach and a tailored packaging and transport plan. The sheer scale of the operation, 6.5 million objects, makes this project truly exceptional. Ensuring safety, maintaining oversight, and guaranteeing continuity during the move are essential.
Our plan of action
Our team of experienced art handlers works with the utmost care, attention, and craftsmanship. For the most fragile objects, custom-made packaging is developed to protect them from shocks, light, and climate fluctuations during transport. The relocation takes place in phases, through multiple shipments, allowing the collection to be transferred in a controlled and well-organised manner. Every step is carefully prepared and executed, in close coordination with the museum.

The result
The photographic collection will find a safe and future-proof home in Pakhuis Santos. Our approach ensures that the relocation is carried out with precision and efficiency, giving the museum full confidence that these unique works will arrive at their new destination unharmed. This project lays the foundation for the renewed public role of the Fotomuseum, where visitors will soon experience photography in all its forms, in an inspiring and sustainable environment.
