Mid-century iconic design collection
Kho Liang Ie at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

The project

For the exhibition Kho Liang Ie – Mid-Century Modernist, we handled the transport of a remarkable and diverse collection for the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. The exhibition presents a broad overview of Kho Liang Ie’s work, ranging from furniture and interiors to graphic design.

Kho Liang Ie played an important role in Dutch design between the 1950s and 1970s. His designs combine functionality with a calm and human touch. With more than 200 objects on display, the exhibition highlights the scale of his influence, including at Schiphol Airport, where he designed waiting areas, seating and wayfinding in the 1960s.

The challenges

The collection consisted of a wide variety of objects, ranging from graphic works and smaller designs to furniture and larger pieces such as the Schiphol telephone booth. Each object required its own approach in terms of handling, packing and transport.

What made this project especially personal was that a large part of the collection was still located in the homes of Kho Liang Ie’s family members. This meant we worked across several intimate locations, where the objects had to be carefully registered, packed and prepared for transport.

One of the highlights of the project was a full working day on location at the home of Kho Liang Ie’s son, where we prepared approximately 75 works for transport to the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Our plan of action

Because the collection came from several private family collections, close coordination was especially important. At each location, we assessed the best approach for safely packing and transporting the objects. We carefully considered both the diversity of the collection and the conditions on site. Some works could be packed immediately, while others required more preparation or custom solutions.

This structured approach allowed us to work efficiently, while still giving every object the attention and care it required.

The result

The exhibition not only brings renewed attention to the work of Kho Liang Ie, but also shows how relevant and influential his designs still are today. The combination of furniture, graphic design and objects from Schiphol creates a remarkably complete picture of his work and vision.

For us, this was a project where logistics, care and collaboration came together. Because many of the objects came from private family collections, the project also had a personal character. A special result that we are proud to have contributed to.
